October: Apples


There is a saying that "an apple a day keeps the doctor away." This is because apples are full of vitamin C and other nutrients that help to keep our hearts healthy and prevent disease. Apples are a wonderful snack; they help us to feel full and travel well. There are many different types of apples—see how many you can try!

Apple "Pizza" (serves 2)

Apple Pizza

One apple
1-2 Tablespoons of the seed or nut butter of your choice
1-2 Tablespoons of raisins or another dried fruit (without added sugar)

Adult: Slice apple in half.
Child: Spread seed or nut butter on the flat side of each half and top each half with raisins or another dried fruit.

Flapple Wraps (serves 2-4)

Flapple Wraps

2 apples
2 Tablespoons maple syrup
1 Tablespoon ground flax seed
2 teaspoons cinnamon
2 whole grain/sprouted tortillas

Adult: Peel then chop the apples into small bite sized pieces.
Child: Combine the apples and all the dry ingredients into a bowl and mix. Let sit for 5-10 minutes.
Adult: Warm the tortillas.
Child: Spoon some filling onto each warmed tortilla.
Adult: Roll up like a burrito.
